It is a tear of one or more Tendons of Rotator Cuff muscles caused due to irritation or the overuse of muscles and tendons is called as Rotator Cuff Tear. The prevalence of Rotator Cuff muscle is 22.1% among the population
Acute Tear: Traumatic injuries due to falling on an outstretched
Degenerative Tear: Occurs due to age, repetitive microtrauma, lifting or pulling heavy objects and ischemia of muscles.
Partial Tear
Small tear- less than 1 cm
Medium tear- 1-3 cm
Full Thickness Tear
Large tear- 3-5 cm
Massive tear- greater than 5cm
It includes pain with overhead activities and worsens at the night, muscle weakness, swelling and altered range of motion of shoulder, stiffness, and difficulty in combing and getting dressed.
The doctor will analyze after a complete medical history and physical examination of shoulder and he will advise for X-ray, MRI or ultrasound to confirm the condition.
MRI Arthrogram may be necessary to establish a labral tear. This done by injecting dye into the shoulder joint followed by an MRI scan.
It includes the use of NSAID’S, topical ointments, cold packs, Physical Therapy or PRP injection at the tear to alleviate the pain as a temporary measure.
The Doctor will perform Surgical treatment if non-operative treatment fails with symptoms persist with loss of functional activities.
Most of Rotator Cuff tears are managed by Arthroscopic surgery. However, open repair might be necessary if the tears are larger and chronic. This can be discussed with your doctor after the MRI.
