Shoulder osteoarthritis is a gradual wearing or breakdown of the articular cartilage of the shoulder joint. As the advancement of the disease, the shoulder surface degenerates losing its sphericity and congruity. It is also called as degenerative joint disease.

Risk Factors

Causes

The causes are divided into primary and secondary.

Primary cause: Its cause is unknown and has no specific cause.
Secondary cause: It has predisposing factors such as major shoulder trauma, dislocation, congenital deformities, infection and chronic Rotator Cuff Tear.

Osteoarthritis Shoulder Symptoms

Deep joint pain mainly activity related, night pain which will interfere with sleep, pain during rest mainly posteriorly, stiffness which leads to functional limitation.

Osteoarthritis Shoulder Diagnosis

Imaging studies such as X – rays, MRI scans and CT scans are essential to diagnose the degenerative joint disease after a complete medical history and physical examination is performed.

Osteoarthritis Shoulder Management

Medical Management

The doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines, NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. If the pain is severe and in advance stage injection of corticosteroids are injected into the shoulder joint.

Surgical Management

If the medical management fails operative management includes Total Shoulder Replacement or Reverse Shoulder Replacement, this would be discussed depending upon your clinical findings at the time of consultation.
