Tennis Elbow

Lateral Epicondylitis is the other name for Tennis Elbow, it is the inflammation of tendons that join the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow, this occurs due to overuse of the elbow, injury and repetitive movements. Tennis elbow is common among sports activities personals.

Tennis Elbow Causes

Recent studies show that it’s caused by overuse of wrist and elbow, activities which involves the vigorous use of forearm muscles in painting, plumbing and carpenters. Age is the other common factor and repetitive injury can lead to tennis elbow.

Symptoms

Pain and burning sensation in elbow and elbow feel’s weak when performing activities such as shaking a hand, holding a coffee cup or holding a racket.

Treatment

Doctor will evaluate the tennis elbow by reviewing the medical history and performing a physical examination and then ordering the X-ray, MRI scan and Electromyogram (EMG) to detect any nerve damage.

Management

Tennis elbow will often heal by itself by taking over the counter medicine and application of cold packs.

Medical Management: If it does not resolve, need to consult a doctor he will advise for rest, NSAIDs, physical therapy and use of braces to relieve pain. If the pain is severely affecting the daily activities, Corticosteroid injections are injected into the joint as further management.

Surgical Management:  If the symptoms do not resolve within 6 – 12 months the doctor will perform open surgery and arthroscopic surgery to relieve severe pain and to improve the lifestyle of the personnel’s.
