Shoulder osteoarthritis is a gradual wearing or breakdown of the articular cartilage of the shoulder joint. As the advancement of the disease, the shoulder surface degenerates losing its sphericity and congruity. It is also called as degenerative joint disease.
Risk Factors
They are many risk factors which include age, genetics, sex, overweight infection of joints, history of injury and dislocation of shoulders.
Causes
The causes are divided into primary and secondary.
Deep joint pain mainly activity related, night pain which will interfere with sleep, pain during rest mainly posteriorly, stiffness which leads to functional limitation.
Imaging studies such as X – rays, MRI scans and CT scans are essential to diagnose the degenerative joint disease after a complete medical history and physical examination is performed.
Medical Management: The doctor will prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines, NSAIDs, COX-2 inhibitors to relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. If the pain is severe and in advance stage injection of corticosteroids are injected into the shoulder joint.
Surgical Management: If the medical management fails operative management includes Total Shoulder Replacement or Reverse Shoulder Replacement, this would be discussed depending upon your clinical findings at the time of consultation.
